One of the oldest Armenian hymns dedicated to a martyr was written in 618. By comparing Syriac, Byzantine and Armenian hymns dedicated to martyrs, the author argues that these hymns were placed, as a rule, on the fourth lateral mode in the Oktoechos ("utdzayn”) Armenian Church music.
