The research presents and analyzes the approaches of British diplomacy to the issues concerning the number of Western Armenians and the ethnic composition of the population of Western Armenia. The paper focuses on the first milestone in the discussion of the Armenian question, which chronologically spans the period immediately after the signing of the Treaty of Berlin, from 1878 to 1882. During this time, the British Foreign Office assumed a particularly significant and, in many ways, leading role in the negotiations on the Armenian reform plan.
