He succeeded to a large extent in keeping his country away from the expansionist desires of these two great powers of the era. The article is based on the works of classical authors like Plutarch, Appian, Cassius Dio, Flavius Jospehus and Cicero. It also makes extensive use of the available secondary literature on this subject in Armenian, Russian, English and German.
