Arsen Aytinyan, Heinrich Peterman, losef Karst, Manuk Abeghyan, Grigor Ghapantsyan, Aarart Gharibyan, A. Marvalyan, Alexander Margaryan, and Gevorg Jahukyan have examined the etymology of the Armenian modal suffix կ(ը). The paper critically analyses the various views expressed. It notes that the hypothesis which comes closest to approval is that suggested by Aytinyan regarding the origination of the functioning կ(ը) /կու suffixes as a modal suffix of the indicative only for the Western regions. Likewise, the author accepts (with some reservations, however,) Margaryan's hypothesis that "the indicative կ(ը) /կու functioning as a modal suffix in the Western regions, which has accepted an all-Armenian extension of կ(ը) in the form of conditional inclination, has different etymological basics."
