The four specialized catalogues published in Armenia during the Soviet period (Garegin Levonian, 1934; Hovhannes Petrosian, 1954-57; Amalya Kirakosian, 1970, and Manvel Babloyan, 1986), as well as a score of partial listings and articles published elsewhere, contain some valuable information, but no study specifically dealing with the subject has been so far undertaken in the Armenian language. The situation is better in Spanish, thanks to the efforts of a researcher, Carlos (Garabed) Hassassian, to whom readers are indebted for two essays of bibliography and brief analysis, in 1974 and 1989, as well as for some short articles. Unfortunately, his pioneering work has gone unnoticed to the specialists, due mainly to the language barrier. This study makes a description of the South American Armenian-language press during the first half of the 20th century, given the fact that this period has been essential for the birth and growth of its main representatives. The author has listed all the periodicals founded until 1950 and has depicted all those that continued after that date or continue to this day. This study is not aimed at an analysis of contents, for some of the periodicals were not accessible to the author, and others have been only partially read. This bibliographical research can offer a tool to conduct such an analysis. No claim of completeness or accuracy is made by the author, due to the above mentioned problems, as well as due to the lack of good collections, the ephemeral nature of some periodicals, the scarcity of auxiliary data, etc. For this reason, says the author, sometimes the presentation is not complete. He has tried to make a critical survey of the information contained in all the primary and secondary sources available, to get the maximum level of accuracy for the time being. During the 1915-1950 period. 36 periodicals were launched in the three main South American Armenian communities: 27 in Argentina, 5 in Brazil, and 4 in Uruguay. Three of them, all in Argentina, continue being published to-date.Հարաւային Ամերիկայի հայ մամուլը, սկիզբէն մինչեւ 1950
