Nonetheless, the fame of the Aintab coppersmiths has survived the Genocide unlike that of the Urfa Armenians. The article analyses the reasons behind this discrepancy and argues that the fame of both Aintab needlework and the Aintab copper work has prevailed over that of Urfa needlework and the copper work due to the Genocide of the Armenians. In this context, the author explores a copper tray produced in Urfa, at around 1909 by a coppersmith named Hagop Manerian, who had disappeared with no trace at all except for three copper works stamped in his name. The author notes that the Armenians of both these towns faced annihilation and massacre. However, unlike the Aintab survivors, the Urfa Armenians could not regroup themselves and had not the chance of reconstructing their pre-genocide habitat in a closed environment. Indeed, the Aintab Armenians opted for self defense in April 1920 and after leaving Aintab resettled in Aleppo, a location only ninety minutes driving distance from Aintab. This enabled them to carry and transfer with them their stock and equipment. The case of the Urfa Armenians differed: their heroic self defense of 1915 lasted some 25 days and ended with extensive killing and the eventual exile of the survivors to the Syrian desert, where they were dispersed. Accordingly, they could not survive as a group and could not carry much with them beyond very basic belongings. The author underpins his argument with the case of needlework. He notes that the lately published Aintab needlework album includes a large number of post-genocide creations, unlike the lately published Urfa needlework album, which is the collection of German officer Bruno Eckart, who had collected samples between 1910 and 1914.Ցեղասպանութեան զոհ՝ Ուրֆայի պղնձագործութիւնը եւ արհեստագէտ Յակոբ Մաներեան
