The author assesses the benefits of teaching handcraft in those schools and notes that it promoted the preservation and development of local traditional and popular art and served as a source of income to the families, thus improving their social conditions. The author notes that teaching handcraft in schools was initiated mostly by American and European missionaries who opened schools in the region from the mid-19th century, taught this art and encouraged its spread through exporting/selling the items abroad. The paper argues that the proceeds of these handcrafts improved the economic conditions of local Armenian families.
