Relationship between Child Maltreatment, Psychological Symptomatology and Social Support among College Students in Lebanon

Abstract
Research indicates that experiences of childhood maltreatment are associated with psychopathology and interpersonal problems in adulthood. The current study examined the relationship between childhood maltreatment and adult psychological symptoms among college students in Lebanon, and the role of social support on mental health outcomes of students with self-reported history of maltreatment. A total of 198 participants were administered Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, Brief Symptom Inventory-53 and Multi-dimensional Scale of Perceived of Social Support. The findings were consistent with the hypotheses. Compared to participants without reported history of maltreatment, the findings indicated that those with history of maltreatment reported higher levels of psychological symptomatology and lower levels of social support. The findings also indicated that the impact of social support on psychological symptomatology was found to be positive within the history of maltreatment group of participants. Results were discussed in light of recent research findings. Clinical implications and suggestions for future research are also discussed.
