After WWI Armenian refugees settled in Syria in four stages: a) after the departure of the Ottoman armies, Armenians returned to their native areas which fell within the borders of Syria. Thirty-two Armenian localities were thus revived, including Aleppo and Damascus; b) after the retreat of the French forces from Cilicia, Aintab and Ourfa, a new outflow took place, and these refugees from the areas of Diarbakir and Bitlis (mainly Kurdish speaking) settled in Ras UI Ayn, Hasake, and the vicinity; d) with the ceding of Alexandretta to Turkey a new wave of refugees poured into Latakia, Aleppo, Damascus and Lebanon. The repatriation of 1946-47 was followed by a flow from rural to urban areas, to Lebanon and abroad. The paper covers the conditions during the established of these settlements intertwined with the evolution of the Syrian Armenian schools until the late 1940s. the article analyses the nature of these schools, their educational level, their founding organizations/ institutions, the denominational communities sponsoring them, their networking, the jurisdiction they were put under, the development of secondary schools and the contribution they made to the Armenian community of Syria.
