| dc.description.abstract | Anton Kochinian (1913-90) was the first secretary of the Communist Party of Soviet Armenia between 1966 and 1974. During his rule Soviet Armenia prospered in an unprecedented manner in the spheres of industry, housing, sciences and sociocultural life. In fact, the era marked the development of the three countries of the Southern Caucasus and their shift to nationalism in line with significant growth in their industrial output. Nationalism and economic growth, however, led to interstate and interethnic frictions as well as acute shortages in energy and a contest for acquiring energy supplies. In this article based on disclosed documents from the archive of Kochinian, the author sheds light on several critical issues of the time, including the quest for energy and the proposal to build a nuclear plant in Soviet Armenia. Interethnic frictions and borderline conflicts are another topic which is detailed in this article, alongside the persecutions and policies adopted by the Soviet Azeri state to deter the economic development of the Autonomous Region of Mountainous Karabagh. Another interesting point is the false accusations of a minority Azeri youth about the persecution by the Soviet Armenian stateof the Azeri minority living in Soviet Armenia. The attached documents are further evidence of the long-standing conflict between the two Soviet states concerning border lines, land and the indigenous rights of the Karabagh Armenians and the discrimination claims of the Azeris living in Armenia. | |
