dc.description.abstractDue to the intense fighting and civil war in Syria, some 20,000 Syrian Armenians have taken refuge in the Republic of Armenia during the last decade. Currently there are around 8-10,000 Syrian Armenians in Armenia. The paper highlights the core difficulties most of the Syrian Armenian refuges students have faced in enrolling in the educational system of Armenia. The difficulties have been due to differences in a) the language of instruction (Arabic vs. Armenian), b) language of communication (Western vs Eastern Armenian), c) curriculum (Syrian vs Armenian). The paper analyses the integration process of the Syrian-Armenian refugees in Armenia and assesses the steps taken by the government to reduce the difficulties at all levels of education. However, obviously the steps taken have not given the results expected. The paper concludes that while the issue of communication with locals has been resolved over time, the cognitive-level problems - differences in educational programs and language features - continued to be a hindrance.
