| dc.description.abstract | The famous writer Vahan Totovents (1889-1938) was among hundreds of Soviet Armenian intellectuals and politicians who were killed during the Stalinist purges. He is especially remembered for his autobiographical novel Life On The Ancient Roman Road (1933), as well as various stories and short novels. Totovents was arrested on July 20, 1936, imprisoned in an NKVD cell, tortured, forced to admit trumped up charges, summarily tried by a "troika" (extrajudicial committee of three people) and immediately shot by a firing squad on July 18, 1938. During the 1930s, Totovents corresponded with friends and relatives residing in the US, where he himself had lived for several years during the 1910s and the early 1920s. In this article Matiossian publishes the annotated text of eight unpublished letters of Totovents written from June 1933 to June 1936 and addressed to Dr. Haig (Charles) Jerahian, an Armenian-American dentist and book collector living in New York. In his introduction, Matiossian also discusses the context of these letters and examines their content to shed some more light on the life and work of Totovents. The letters mostly deal with the writer's avid interest in Western literature, which matched Jerahian's interest in Armenian books. They also give a glimpse into the literary activities (writings, translations) and personal life of Totovents. | |
