Abstract
The 1960s and 70s constituted an experimental era for Soviet Armenian composers as they were introduced to medieval Armenian music. These composers delved into understanding their roots, which led their creative minds into the oldest layers of national culture. From then on these composers tried to discover medieval Armenian music and incorporate them into their musical compositions.
Medieval Armenian monody has unique content, structure and style and different ways were found to incorporate it in the modern compositions of Soviet Armenian composers.
Zurabian identifies a broad group of composers who introduced excerpts of sharakans and taghs in their compositions for musical instruments. These include Ghazaros Sarian, Levon Astvatsaterian, Edgar Hovhannissian, Edward Baghdassarian, Sergey Aghadjanian, Robert Sarksian, Yervand Yerkanian and many others.
At the same time Armenian bard music was highly demanded by other Soviet Armenian composers. Indeed, Krikor Hakhinian, Stepan Shakarian, Khachadur Avedisian, Roupen Altounian and others created highly artistic compositions for popular musical instruments based on the songs of Sayat Nova. Others, like Arno Babadjanian, Kevork Saradjian and Robert Antreasian, composed similar pieces for piano.
These composers actively created bridges to the new modes of expression of the 20th century. Theme and nature changed in instrumental music compositions, and music's role in introducing the artistic character was enhanced. The factorial theme was given further importance with strict intervals and rhythmic and dynamic contrasts in both polytonal and atonal contexts. These themes were highly emotional and active in their nationalism.
These new compositions of dissonance had clear, bright colors engulfed in the national traditions of Armenian music.
