Abstract
The author delves into the controversial discussion on the origins of two Armenian royal dynasties, the Yervandunis (Orontids) and the Bagrutunis (Bagratids). According to the primary sources, there are two apparently contradictory versions on the origins of the Yervandunis. Based on these different sources, some scholars consider the Yervandunis to be natives of Armenia, others, descendants of the Achaemenids or of a close associate of the Achaemenid King, Dawnus. Still other sources claim that the Yervandunis came from an area called Boriadjik in Pergamum, situated at the south-eastern tip of the Armenian Highland. As far as the Bag are concerned, some sources consider them to be natives of Armenia, while others claim a Jewish origin for them.
The author notes that most researchers have rejected the hypothesis of a Jewish origin for the Bagratunis, for different reasons.
The author then highlights, among several other details, the fact that the word bags", part of the dynastic name of the Bagratunis, is also found in several inscriptions and, with minor variations, in the names of different localities in the Kingdom of Urartu. After analysing and summing up such details of geographical and historical significance, be concludes that the Yervandunis and the Bagratunis originated in the same location, the southern district of the Armenian Highland. He asserts that by the sixth century B.C., these two dynasties had taken into their hands the political and military mantle of the country and had consolidated themselves into natural coalition. By lining up the names of several Armenian localities, which are linked to the names of these two dynasties, the author depicts the possible trajectory that these two dynasties followed to reach the Armenian hinterland. The author reiterates the opinion of Nicholas Adonts that the Bagratunis had originated in the south of the Armenian Highland on an Armenian-Iranian ethnic basis to conclude that the Yervandunis had a very similar origin.
