Abstract
Studies on the musical legacy of Komitas represent one of the developing fields of Armenian musicology. Over the course of almost a century, impressive volumes have seen the light in Komitas studies. A significant part of these volumes are studies of his biography, musical career and musicological heritage or analyses of his musical endeavors and compositions. Several volumes of his transcriptions of Armenian ethnological and folkloric music have been published, too. Furthermore, diverse studies have focus on his artistic and aesthetic views.
Komitas Vardapet was not only the founder of Armenian National music and composition, but also one of the founders of Armenian folkloric and medieval music studies. He is considered the one who laid the scientific bases of these studies. His theoretical and comparative studies marked the paths for the further development of ethnomusicology in general and Armenian ethnomusicology in particular.
The paper summarises how Komitas' musical heritage is evaluated, as well as how it has impacted contemporary Armenian musical output, and assesses its influence on current Armenian music education. The paper looks as well at the main study tracks of Komitas' legacy.
