| dc.description.abstract | During the post-Tanzimat period Western philosophical trends were introduced to the Ottoman Empire. This was for political reasons. In their search for ways to salvage the failing Ottoman Empire, Turkish Ottoman intellectuals thought that the spread of political philosophy and a scientific mindset would be helpful to the empire. As of the 1870s positivist philosophy, which was considered to promote a scientific mindset, was spread by Armenian intellectuals like Yeghia Demirdjibashian and Gosdantian in Armenian literary circles through two scientific magazines, Medeora (1880-81) and Kidagan Sharjum (1885-1887). On the other hand, Demirdjibashian promoted positivist philosophy through his magazine Kragan yev Imasdasiragan Sharjum (Literary and Philosophical Movement) (1883-1888). introduced the materialist and evolutionist schools of philosophy, published articles on these subjects and taught philosophy in Armenian schools. Until 1908, he and Gosdantian were among the first champions of positivist philosophy in the Ottoman Empire, at a time when very few philosophical materials were published. | |
