| dc.description.abstract | In one of his interviews, the contemporary Armenian author, Hrant Matevossian, acknowledges that "... there are periods and facts in the history of human kind, that literature should not address, like the bloody genocide of 1915... It seems that the agony [of the genocide] fades out, disappears when addressed in literature." However, even after expressing his reservation in addressing issues of "huge, remote history" which are beyond his memory and personal experience, Matevossian has attempted to interpret national history. Particularly, Matevossian tries to tackle the issue of the Armenian Genocide using an intellectual-philosophical approach. He analyses the tragedy through a paradigm which is composed of reasoning and cause and effect, and also through uncovering of the historical rhythm. "What was necessary to do in order to avoid the Genocide" is the axis around which Matevossian weaves his network of questions and concerns. Why would the genocide take place in 1915, and not, for example, at another point in time? Why is it that even our victories have served the enemy. Matevossian does not seem to have a decisive answer for these questions. Nevertheless he hints that national statehood is what he sees as the guarantor of the nation's harmonious existence. | |
