dc.description.abstractThe Armenian religious presence in the Holy Lands dates back to the 4th -5th centuries, with Cyril of Scythopolis (524-560) being the main source on the presence of Armenian monks in the Holy Lands in the Early Christian period. The paper focuses on a number of Armenian monks who gave further impetus to a Christian presence in Palestine. Some of them had become abbots of non-Armenian monasteries; others had joined non-Armenian Christian convents. Euthymius the Great (377-473), for instance, was one of the founders of Palestinian monasticism, while Sophronius (542), was the second abbot of the monastery founded by Theodosius Cenobiarch (423-529 A.D.). Still, others, like John Hesychast (454-559), lived in the monastery of Great Lavra. In certain cases the Armenian monks conducted the Divine service in Armenian.
