Abstract
The Armenian subjects of the Safavid state who lived in the regions of Eastern Armenia as well as those who had settled in Isfahan and its vicinity were granted dhimmi status. This status was based on pacts concluded by Arab conquerors with high-ranking Armenian clerics in conformity with the aqd al-dhimma concluded by the Prophet Muhammad with the non-Muslim communities of the Arab Peninsula. The initial entitlement and duties, however, were modified and detailed in time due to new circumstances and nuances and were fixed in the decrees obtained by the Armenian catholicoi from the Safavid shahs and high Muslim clerics.
Based on the Mesrob Mashdots Old Manuscripts Institute's (Madenataran's) archival collection of such Persian documents, the article explores the rights and duties of Armenian dhimmis in Safavid Iran between the 17th and 18th centuries, specifically focusing on practices of inheritance, ownership and taxing, which elucidate certain aspects of the socio-economic state of the Armenians under Safavid rule.
