Abstract
Folk literature has clearly always been at the center of Toumanian's literary interests. With his able penmanship many folk tales have been newly reconstructed and have become a mainstay in Armenian literature.
The paper examines the criticisms addressed to Toumanian by his contemporaries regarding his use of folk material. The article theorises the modes of these criticisms, which have ushered in various ideas. The diverse and often contradictory views in the critiques have given the poet the chance to develop a full-fledged discipline on the subject, which enables him to lay out his extended views on criticism, literary mindset, and issues of literary creation.
The paper focuses on the particular fairy and folk tales which have attracted most criticism, and the reviews written on the. These diverse criticisms have differed in their appreciation of Toumanian's literary works. In certain cases, however, they have been the result of human envy and malice, blaming him of plagiarism.
Toumanian's response to his critics constitutes his approach regarding the relation between folk tales and literature. These approaches form a systematic theory, which is still valid today.
