Despite the small number of nunneries in the Armenian Church, there have been about ten nunneries in different provinces of historical Artsakh. They date back to the 17th century, when such convents faced a period of revival. Similar convents whose dates preceded and followed this are less well documented. These nunneries of Artsakh were not only convents, but also cultural centers, where manuscripts were copied and illustrated. One such manuscript is the famous Gospel Manuscript at a nunnery in the historical province of Varanda, which dates back to the 17th century. The nunneries of Artsakh undeniably constitute an important part of the spiritual and cultural heritage of Artsakh. However, currently they are either completely or partly destroyed and are controlled by the Azeris, which makes their future unclear.
