| dc.description.abstract | The report is one of the very few documents existing on the Armenian-populated town of Denek Maden (Kesgin). It was written by the town teacher, Agheksanter Keyedjian, in 1900 and submitted to the ethnographic magazine of Constantinople, Puragen, but was not published. The town was located in the province of Kershehir in the Anguria (Ankara) district and was the center of its namesake sub-province, Denek Maden. The author starts with general notes on Denek Maden and then details the lives of the local Turks and Greeks, their financial conditions and value system. The author situates the Armenians of the town in this context and notes that there have been three major and separate waves of Armenian immigrations: those who came from Gurin, those who came from Caesarea, and those who came from Yozgat. Then the author describes the character and profile of each of these immigrant groups. their financial and educational conditions, their businesses, careers, crafts, trades, cuisine, etc. The report bears further importance due to the fact that very little has been written about Denek Maden and is mostly scattered over different papers and in a number of memoires. | |
