Social philosophy in Armenia had gone through four stages of development by the fifth century A.D. when Mesrob Mashdots and his disciples - began with a cultural and political movement-to formulate an original Armenian social philosophy. The first stage of social philosophy in Armenia was the pre-Christian period, influenced strongly by Hellenistic thought and the creation of political administrative machinery by the Artaxiad Dynasty. The second stage was the early Christian period, in feudal Armenia, when two factors become especially significant: the spread of Christianity and its adoption as the state religion, and the rules formulated at the council of Ashdishad in 345 A. D., presided over by Catholicos Nerses the Great. The third stage was the period of the heretical movements which were sects who preached their ideas in Armenian, Greek and Assyrian languages. Finally, the fourth stage was the century immediately before Mesrob Mashdots, when translators were forming orally in Armenian historical, aesthetic, theological and philosophical terminology.
