Abstract
Gosdantin Hampartsoumian (1882-1918) is a renowned figure in the Armenian national liberation movement, having dedicated his life to the liberation of Western Armenia. Born in Shushi, Hampartsoumian attended the local school. After joining the Armenian Revolutionary Federation, he was assigned to act in Northern Persia and later relocated to the Southern Caucasus. In collaboration with one of the ARF founders, Christapor Mikayelian, he planned the assassination attempt on Sultan AbdulHamid Il and also participated in the Armenian-Tatar skirmishes in 1905-06, heading the defense of the Zangezur Armenians. He was arrested in 1909 and after his release left for Belgium, where he studied agriculture for three years. In autumn 1914 he joined the Armenian voluntary forces and on May 7, 1915 was recruited in the Van district offices. In 1916 Hampartsoumian was the plenipotentiary representative of the Union of the Pan Russian Cities Caucasus Section in Van, and he had a significant input on the rehabilitation of the Van District residential areas. After the 1917 February revolution he was appointed commissioner of the Van Region and after the departure of the Russian forces headed the Van Armenian authority as of January 18, 1918. Hampartsoumian headed the retreat of the Vasburagan population to Persia following the attack of the Turko-Kurdish forces on March 2. He was killed in action on July 24, 1918.
