Abstract
The study provides extensive information on the traditions of woodworked spoon: and spoon-boxes, which were a part of wooden tableware. It reveals the symbolism o their decorative motifs, their mode of use and their place in Armenian cultural ethnography and tradition.
The article offers a broad view of the usage of and folk beliefs related to wooden
spoons in different parts of the Armenian Highland.
The article notes, however, that currently only a part of these old rituals, traditions, and popular beliefs have survived. At the same time, these wooden spoons have become quite fashionable and are used as decorative ethnographic art, displayed or given as gifts to newly married couples, symbolizing unity, fertility, family, etc.
The article concludes that the shift in the function and usage of these wooden spoons has facilitated new exposure and a new life for them as well as bringing them out of the museums. As souvenirs, these reshaped Armenian wooden spoons have become a specimen of reinvented and renewed Armenian ethnographic decorative art.
