During an excavation in Karashamb Village of Godayk District, Armenia in 1987, archeologist Vahan Hovhannissian discovered rhyton which was immediately dated as a relic of the Bronze age. The relic, which was found in the tomb of a prince, was 13.2 cm. high, had a width of 10.6 cm. and weighed 215 grams. Among its seven rows of pictures one depicts a scene that shows two similar musical instruments. These have no similarity whatsoever with any of the traditional musical instruments of Armenia or the Caucasus, which made Hovhannisian describe them as "unfamiliar instruments". However, in a second article Hovhannisian considered them to be musical instruments. Basing his conclusion on comparative musicology, the author finds a similarity between these instruments and the Siwa musical instrument of Kenya still in use during popular traditional celebrations on the islands of Lamou and Pate. The author concludes that the Karashamb musical instruments can be considered huge horns.
