Abstract
The author, a site researcher from Karabagh, brings to public attention one of the most famous fortresses of Karabagh, Gatchaghagapert. Built on a rocky outcropping at a height of 1172 meters above sea level (some 1000 meters above its surroundings), the fortress was the major seat of the Armenian princes of the Khatchen region. The author notes that there were two fortresses with the same name, which confused several researchers who tried to locate the fortress. Based on the archeological materials found in the fortress, Sarksian argues that the fortress was built in the late Bronze Age (2"d-15 millennium BC). He then describes the fortress's defensive mechanism, the thickness of its walls, and its size, covering an area of some 8.370 sq. meters. He also compares its characteristics with those of other fortresses of the region. The article touches upon the history of the fortress, including its role in the defense of the region and against the invading Seljuk, Mongol and Tatar armies.
