| dc.description.abstract | The Turkish-Armenian war of 1920 had a tragic impact on and consequences for the population of Vanand (Kars) and Shirak provinces in the Republic of Armenia, which were occupied by the Turks for a while. The paper details the massacres, repressions and looting the Turks conducted in the four districts of Shirak province during their occupation. The paper argues that, alongside economic destruction, the occupying Kemalist forces aimed at annihilating the local Armenian population in 1920-1921. Indeed, the Turkish military occupation conducted an anti-Armenian policy and mass massacres, which resulted in the depopulation of the province and the loss of vital means of survival and reproduction for the inhabitants. References are made to the genocidal actions of the Kemalists against the Armenian civilian population and the forms of mass executions. The author notes that these acts are considered genocidal according to the provisions of the 1948 Genocide Convention. | |
