Հայ օրհներգութեան սկզբնաւորումը

Abstract
Fifth century Armenian poetry was basically ecclesiastical hymnology. Later on, it was called sharakan. In this article Henrik Bakhchinian highlights the historic and cultural conditions which led to the initiation and the eventual institutionalization of Armenian hymnology. The author notes that translations of the biblical psalms and prayers constituted the base upon which Armenian ecclesiastical music was initiated. Gradually these developed into thoroughly original Armenian songs. To be sure, this multistage evolutionary process took place in the 4th-5th centuries. Thereafter. Armenian spiritual songs developed on their own unique track, which peaked with the compilation of the Sharaknots, where all such songs were listed. The Sharaknots attained its final form in the 15th century. The article assesses the variations as well as the characteristic features of the various categories of the sharakans. The author stresses the importance of the sharakans as the first musical poems in the Armenian milieu created by individuals.
