Abstract
The article focuses on the origin of one of the most renowned Armenian noble families, the Mamikonians.
After outlining the traditional view on the origin of the Mamikonians, that they fled from China and took refuge in Armenia in the late third or early fourth century AD, the author discusses the different views of various scholars in this regard. He observes that the fieldoms of the later medieval Armenian noble family, the Khaghbakians, overlapped those of the Mamikonians. This fact, together with other details (such as the cost of arms of the two dynasties, their names, ens.), leads the author to suggest that these two families had strong ties with one another, going to the sixth century AD. He claims that the Khaghbakians descended from the Mamikonians and quotes several sources which, he argues, indirectly support this assumption.
The author disagrees with the renowned historian Nicholas Adonts, who suggested that Mamkayos, one of the generals of Tigran II the Great and the head of the Armenian defense forces in Tigranocenta in 69 B.C., could he the nahapet (i.e. the founder) of the Mamikonian-Khaghbakian dynasty. He argues that Mamkayos could only be a representative of the Mamikonian-Khaghbakian noble house since, he claims, this dynasty goes further back than the age of Mamkayos.
