Abstract
Based on the study of a number of speeches and sermons given by the late Catholicos Vazgen I, the article discusses the use of rhetoric and examines the secret of the powerful influence of his speech. Furthermore, in order to have a better understanding of the rhetorical skills of Catholicos Vazgen I, unrecorded verbal information as well as memoires provided by people who had come in contact with the Catholicos have also been used. These are underpinned by relevant concepts of psychological, rhetorical theory and literature. The study notes that the late Catholicos successfully used different rhetorical techniques like historical context, ethos, and pathos as well as influential pauses to focus the audience and give it time to ruminate. He skillfully used his voice, his gaze, and different types of rhetorical questions.
