Abstract
The Armenian Democratic Liberal Party (ADLP) daily, Arev, is the oldest ADL newspaper in the Diaspora. Its first issue was published on May 11, 1915. In his article the author unravels the circumstances leading to its publication in Cairo. Cairo had started replacing Constantinople as the leading center of the Western Armenians. Both the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) and the ADLP felt the need for a self-owned news organ. The ARF acquired the Hoosaper daily and issued its first number on March 30, 1919. Basically to counterbalance this newspaper and the attacks of ARF authors on the ADLP, the Armenian General Benevolent Union, the National Delegation leaders and Boghos Noubar in person, felt the necessity of a newspaper. Thus, the Arev was acquired. Basing his study on archival materials, the author details the discussion, concerns, and preparations that took place prior to the inception of Arev. In the second part of the article, the bylaws of the Arev publishing company are published.
