| dc.description.abstract | The 20ᵗʰ century was the darkest chapter in the history of the Assyrian nation. It completely reshaped the destiny of the Assyrian minority in Ottoman Turkey, a minority that was repeatedly victimized by genocidal assaults over the past century, subjected to violence and forced conversions. The most significant persecution against the Assyrians was the Genocide in the Ottoman Empire which was perpetrated during the First World War, authored by the government of the Young Turks. The Ottoman Empire’s widespread persecution of Assyrian civilians during WWI constituted a form of genocide, the present-day term for an attempt to destroy a national, ethnic, or religious group, in whole or in part. Ottoman soldiers and their Kurdish and Iranian militia partners subjected hundreds of thousands of Assyrians to a deliberate and systematic campaign of massacre, torture, abduction, deportation, impoverishment, and cultural and ethnic destruction. The genocide of the Assyrians took place under the same circumstances as the Armenian genocide. It was part of the same process, taking place in the same locations and at the same time as the Armenian genocide. Henry Morgenthau, who served as US ambassador in Constantinople until 1916, stated in his memoirs: "The Armenians are not the only subject people in Turkey which have suffered from this policy of making Turkey exclusively the country of the Turks.
