Abstract
The essay presents the recently discovered “Joghovatzu Baratter Gavarakan Barits” (Dictionary of Collected Provincial Words) dictionary of provincial words, compiled by Ghevond Vardapet P‘irghalēmēan (1830, Van–1891, Jerusalem), a prominent philologist, clergyman and traveller. Ghevond Vardapet recorded provincial words mainly during his travels in the cities and towns of Western Armenia, particularly Van, Mush, Karin, Kars, Archesh, and Shatakh, as well as Yerevan, Tbilisi and Tabriz. Most of the words, however, are typical of the Van dialect, as he was originally from Van and a monk at the Varag Monastery of Van.
