The role of Dersim has always been unique not only for Armenians but also for Zazas and Kurds living in the region. Due to its geographical position Dersim has often become a refuge for rebels and insurgents. The semi-independence of Dersim was a matter of concern for the Ottoman authorities at different times and made them take certain actions, which became especially apparent in the 19ᵗʰ century. After the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey in 1923, the Dersim problem assumed more importance, and the state embarked on a genocidal project against the region. State’s military actions against Dersim in the 1930s had a direct connection with the Armenian Genocide. In fact the Genocide in Dersim in 1936-38 had anti-Armenian undercurrents, as Armenians living in Dersim were among the first and most important targets of the Turkish authorities.
