dc.description.abstractIn the aftermath of the Genocide a survivor, losing hope of finding his wife, marries a widow. The first wife, however, reappears. As polygamy is forbidden by the Armenian Apostolic Church, a priest calls the three and asks the husband to choose between his two legitimate wives. The husband chooses his good-looking new wife. The priest, concerned with the fate of the poor, miserable old wife, comments on the decision: "I would have married your good-looking wife. The problem is what happens to your old wife." Eventually he suggests that the husband select the old wife. The author highlights a number of such comic anecdotes and humorous situations that happened during the Armenian Genocide, were caused by it, happened in its aftermath or are related to the Genocide. The author categorises these anecdotes according to the circumstances and notes that these go far beyond reflecting the genocide per se. Rather, they are meant to reinvigorate Armenian spirit and pride.
