Abstract
The article discusses the impact of late 19th century, Soviet and post-Soviet emigration on Armenian families. It is based on archival materials, press coverage and analyses, and statistical data as well as ethnographic field work conducted by the author. The author notes that during the second half of the 19th century emigrants of Western Armenia left mainly for Constantinople, where their number reached up to 50-60,000. On the other hand emigrants of Eastern Armenia left mainly for the major industrial centers of Transcaucasia and Russia like Baku, Tiflis, Elizavetpol, etc. The author argues that emigration had a negative socio-psychological impact on families and family relationships and cites Yervant Lalayan's claim that it contributed to the collapse of the patriarchal family and the formation of small families. Soviet rule in Armenia brought huge changes to human socioeconomic and political relations and marked a shift in the nature, content, forms, direction and consequences of labor migration on family relations and family construct. Out of a total population of 3,218,400 an estimated 24,931 migrant workers had left Soviet Armenia in 1983. In the post-Soviet period massive emigration took place from the Republic of Armenia and reached 40-50,000 annually. In his analysis, the author assesses emigration as a disruptor of the normal life cycle and sequence of family life, a hindrance to spouses' reciprocal adaptation, and a source of the development of family conflicts and divorce, due to a short, insufficient pre-marital acquaintance period, absence of the father figure from the newly formed family immediately after marriage, living apart immediately after the birth of the first/second child and the decrease of the father's role in socializing and educating the children, leading to a number of socio-psychological problems within the family. The author concludes that during both pre-Soviet, Soviet and post-Soviet times emigration had a significant impact on family relations and was a critical factor leading to the increase in the number of unstable families and divorces in Armenia.
