Abstract
The author focuses on books dedicated to topics which were previously considered to be taboos, like the Armenian Genocide, the Armenian Question, Islamized Armenians and the Emvale Metruke, published in Turkey between 2008 and 2018.
The author explains that the reason for this tolerance was the negotiations which were supposed to eventually lead to Turkey’s membership in the EU. She notes that after the Turkish-Armenian rapprochement initiated by Turkish-Armenian Football diplomacy in 2008 and the signing of the Turkish-Armenian protocols in October 2009 in Zurich, the Ermeni Acilimi, “Armenian initiative,” which triggered a relatively tolerant contemporary Armenian discourse in Turkey, was started.
Thus, between 2008 and 2018 the Armenian Genocide, the Armenian Question and a set of relevant topics became the subject of a significant number of research and literary books published in Turkey. The author notes, however that in the last two years researchers and writers living in Turkey have avoided publishing such books due to the aftermath of the failed coup attempt in July 2016. Indeed, the extraordinary measures imposed on the country have led to the curtailment of freedom of speech and several other human rights, in turn leading to the closure of news agencies with relatively free expression and the persecution of a number of researchers, writers, journalists and pamphleteers.
Having said this, one should stress as well that during the said decade the traditional denialist policy of the state and Turkish official historiography continued unabated.
