Abstract
The author criticizes the late Rafayel Matevosian's article, “Moves Kharenatsi's Account on the Origin of the Mamikonian-Khaghbakian Dynasty", published in volume 19 of the Haigazian Armenological Review. He argues that Matevosian's article is based on mistakes, misinterpretations and contradictory explanations. There were significant errors in the section dealing with the historiography of the origin of the Mamikonians. Other aspects of the history of the Mamikonians and the Khaghbakians, their coat of arms, their dynastic names, the etymologies of different toponyms were also presented incorrectly, leading to untenable conclusions. The author argues that the Mamikonians and the Khaghbakians were never the same dynasty, they had different origins. He also contends that there is no sufficient evidence to claim that the Khaghbakians were an
ancient noble house, and that neither the Khaghbakians nor the Mamikonians were the descendants of the nahapet (patriarch) Gushar mentioned by Moves Khorenatsi.
The author also dismisses Matevosian's arguments disputing the historicity of the dynastic name 'Proshian', He also summarizes his earlier arguments on the native Armenian origins of the Mamikonians and the ancient origins of their dynastic coat of arms.
