Abstract
Theotig (1873-1928) is one of the very few renowned scholars that survived the Armenian Genocide. His scholarly reputation mainly evolves around two works: Hushartsan Abril Dasnemegi (Monument Of April 11), which is a collection of biographies of Armenian scholars, cultural figures, intellectuals and clerics who were massacred during the Armenian Genocide, and the 23 volumes of Amenun Daretsuytse (Everyone’s Diary), which were published intermittently in Constantinople (1907-1920). Venice (1921-1926), and Paris (1927-1928). These volumes are considered to be primary sources of Armenology.
Vache Ghazarian publishes 24 letters of Theotig addressed to Father Mesrob Neshanian of Jerusalem (1872-1944), between October 1/14, 1911 and December 20,1926.
These letters throw new light on the process of compiling the volumes of Diaries at a time when communication was not as easy as it is today. The letters uncover Theotig soliciting articles, even suggesting what to write about. They unfold aspects of the financial hardships and marketing difficulties of these volumes. The letters put in the limelight the sensitive Theotig, his human relationships and the grief he feels on the loss of his wife, who worked with him in the preparation of these diaries.
