Abstract
Paolo Ananian (Istanbul, 1879-New York, 1942) started his bass soloist career in the opera of Monte Carlo, France. Later on he performed at the Metropolitan Opera, became a permanent soloist of the Ravenna Opera summer performances, performed in the San Francisco opera and performed in other places too. As a soloist singer at the opera between 1905 and 1908 Ananian registered his performances on Odeon acoustic 78 rpm discs (all in all, 22 sides). Shortly after, he was recruited by the Metropolitan Opera, where between 1908 and 1935 he became a permanent soloist, and was the first Armenian who performed at the Metropolitan. The Saturday Matinee Broadcasts of the opera were pirated and later on were traded and made public. Ananian had participated in three live opera recordings of the Metropolitan, namely La Traviata, Roméo et Juliette and La Bohème.
