| dc.description.abstract | The author analyses the influence that various famous European painters had on the art of the Armenian painter Wardan Mahokian (1869-1937), who was born in Trabzon in the Ottoman Empire, educated in Berlin and spent the latter part of his life in France. The influence of Ivan Aivazovskii is very evident in the early part of Mahokian's career. It later gives way, however, to the influences of the Swiss painter Arnold Böcklin and the Frenchman Gustave Courbet. Mahokian was inclined toward the Symbolist school in painting but was never overwhelmed by the latter; he never forfeited certain elements of Realism. The influence of Courbet's positive realism is particularly noticeable in Mahokian's attempt to depict life in motion, his solitude, the urge to escape to nature's fold and his dissatisfaction with his own fate. This trend is in accordance with themes developed separately by two famous Armenian poets of the period. Avetik Isahakian and Vahan Terian. | |
