dc.description.abstractThe article focuses on the causes of the current difficult situation of Armenian agriculture. These include state indifference, smallness of agricultural plots (which makes the use of machinery impossible), the lack of a merger of village communities (which leads to the desertion of villages, and in turn further encourages the high rate of emigration and provides a good chance for buying deserted land at cheap prices). The paper underlines the fact that maintaining highland village communities is a security concern for the Republic of Armenia. It notes as well that the peasant who used to feed the country is in need of social security and systematic state support. The paper suggests the following steps to help improve the dire conditions in the villages: a) Provide conditions for the promotion of small and middle businesses in the villages, b) Legally enlarge and consolidate the participation of the local inhabitants in local governance, which would improve transparency and enhance local governance units' responsibility. c) Cultivate policies for the agricultural and agronomic development of the Armenian village, d) Support and promote exhibitions of local products and advertise them. e) Assess the current agronomic potential of the villages. The paper concludes that the current local economic potential and the availability of international and Diaspora means of support enable the development and realisation of a competitive and interest-oriented agro-economic sphere in the Republic of Armenia.
