| dc.description.abstract | To this day, there exist in the courtyard of New Julfa's All-Saviour monastery 62 tombstones. Of these, 24 belong to clergy-men (11 prelates, 10 friars, and 3 priests), 36 belong to laymen (of which 13 are Europeans: Russian and English proconsuls, politicians, doctors, etc.), and two are unknown. The inscriptions on these tombstones are interesting and helpful for the study of the history of New Julfa between the 17th and 19th centuries. Of special significance are the inscriptions on the gravestones of the prelates of the Irano-Indian diocese. (At the end of this article, the author presents eight of those inscriptions, including the one which belongs to Khachatour Kessaratsi (1590-1646), the founder of New Julfa's first printing press). | |
