| dc.description.abstract | Making use of the documentary and official materials especially of the British Foreign Office, the article endeavours to bring to light the nature and how the publication of 24 May 1915 declaration of the Entente Powers in face to the facts of the Ottoman atrocities and massacres of Armenians just at the beginning of the First World War, after Gevorg the Fifth, the Catholicos of All Armenians, appealed to the British, Russian, French, Italian and other potentates of the time. According to the givens and their analysis, the author concludes that the united declaration of the Great Powers was not made to impede and stop, if possible, the deportation and massacres of the Armenian population of the Ottoman Empire, but rather to encourage the Armenians in the Caucasus and various regions of the Russian Empire to bring help to the war efforts of that Empire. The author also concludes that the article 230 of the Treaty of Sèvres, which dealt with the problem of war criminals, but was left aside when the Treaty of Lausanne was signed between the Entente Powers and Turkey, was the basis for the later publication of the Nuremberg and Tokyo declarations (articles 6c and 5c respectively) at the end of the Second World War. In fact, the Treaty of Lausanne included an appendix which declared pardoned all crimes committed between 1 August 1914 and 20 November 1922. | |
