| dc.description.abstract | Hovsep Vartanian (1815 – 1879) was one of the outstanding western Armenian journalists and a literary figure. Due to historical circumstances, Hovsep Vartanian’s journalistic and literary career was mainly in Armeno-Turkish (Turkish language printed in Armenian characters). Hovsep Vartanian’s best known work was a novel entitled “Agapi”. It was published anonymously in 1851. Due to its anonymity, a lack of interest and some misunderstandings, the novel was almost forgotten during the following decades. It was a century after its first publication in Turkish that the novel was translated into Armenian and attributed to its proper author. The article brings to light new facts that enrich our knowledge of the life and literary career of Hovsep Vartanian. | |
