dc.description.abstractThe Great Heinous Crime (Medz Yeghern) of the Armenian genocide earned the dubious honor of becoming the first humanitarian catastrophe of the twentieth century. Tens of thousands of refugees were able to escape from the annihilation and find precarious shelter in the Caucasus. Many Armenian institutions and organizations, including the Apostolic Church, made efforts to come to their assistance. The document is a hitherto unpublished letter-order sent from the office of the Catholicosate of Holy Echmiadzin in June 1916 to the prelate of the Armenian Prelacy of America, Very Rev. Arsen Vehuni. A copy is kept at the archives of the Krikor and Clara Zohrab Information Center in New York. The letter, most probably written by the director of the office, Bishop Tirayr Der Hovannissian (later prelate of the Armenian Prelacy of America, 1921-1928), raised five points: a) need for clothing and money for the refugees; b) funds to ensure the reopening of the Kevorkian Seminary, closed in 1915-1916 due to the need to shelter the refugees; c) gratitude for the work of American missionaries, as well as some reservations towards them; d) the organization of the return of Armenian Americans to the homeland, at a time when a significant portion of Western Armenia had been occupied by Russia; e) assistance to Armenian refugees in Mesopotamia. In his introduction, the author contextualizes the letter with the addition of information culled from various publications of the time.
