| dc.description.abstract | Based on the arguments raised by Vahan Teryan, the author defines and analyses the types of scholars he conceptualized. In particular, the author examines two of Teryan's most renowned and extensive research papers: "The future of Armenian Literature" and "Spiritual Armenia". According to the author, Teryan outlines two types of scholars: "the nationalist scholar" and "the national scholars Teryan, defines the "national scholar" as a thinker that has developed himself on European standards and is capable of modernizing Armenian culture and literature. On the other hand, Teryan notes that the "nationalistic or bourgeois scholar" cannot transcend scholastic thinking. He argues that the process of modernizing culture and literature is only possible through institutional transformation of schools, mode of thought, meta-language, and modernization of the language as well as through shifting the scope of literature. Finally, Teryan believes that the modernization of culture and literature can come about only by moving them from "nationalistic" to "supra-national" grounds. | |
