Abstract
This study is a direct continuation of the article “The Territorial Jurisdiction of the Armenian Patriarchs with Their Seat in Persian Armenia in the 5th-7th Centuries” published in the Haigazian Armenological Review (2018:38, p. 93-116).
Based on the numerous historical sources of the 6th-12th centuries in Grabar, Byzantine Greek, Classical Syriac, Arabic and Georgian, as well as the acts and protocols of the church councils convened in Greater Armenia (Mets Hayk) and neighboring Albania (Aghvank), which were made official by the Armenian catholicos Hovhananes III Odznetsi (717-28) in the Kanonagirk Hayots, as well as archival documents of the Girk Teghtots, the author maps the territories under the jurisdiction and protectorate of the Armenian catholicoi in the 7th-8th centuries.
The author argues that prior to the consolidation of Arab domination in the region and the creation of the province of Armintya in the early 8th c., the Armenian catholicoi (with their seat in Dvin) formally accepted the Chalcedonic Creed, to avoid likely violations of their church and canonical jurisdiction by Constantinople as had been the case between 594 and 610. However, as of 704 the Armenian catholicoi supported by the Caliphate, reclaimed their non-Chalcedonic creed and gained further power in their patronage of the Albanian Catholicosate in Partav.
Furthermore, during the church council of Manazkert (726) a dogmatic unity between the Armenian and the Jacobite Syrian Church was established. Based on the list of the participant bishops, the paper maps the area falling under the jurisdiction of the Catholicoi of Dvin and states that it basically covered the areas falling within the former Persian part of Greater Armenia, where the marzpanates of Armenia, Assyria and Atropatene were formed.
