Abstract
The Prince of Princes, Kurd Il Vachutyan of Anberd, governor of the governorship Ayrarat, ruled between 1300 and 1350. He is considered an outstanding ruler of 14th century Armenian history.
Kurd Il was a far-sighted diplomat and a patriot. He established good relations with successive Mongol rulers, like Ghazan and Khudabende/Harpand, and was welcomed by them. These khans, in return for his services, granted him the right of independent rulership of the district of Ayrarat.
Kurd Il, however, taking advantage of the weakening of the Mongols, established and trained a combat-ready army, and at the proper time recaptured and fortified fortresses (Anberd, Karbi) lost to the enemy.
Based on historical data and diverse sources, the article narrates the political career of Kurd Il in the turbulent times of the first half of the 14t century and portrays him as a patriotic, visionary diplomat.
